VIA Contributes to Current Budget
Helping Museum in Tough Economic Times

This is the year for sensible adjustments in all our budgets, the Nevada Museum of Art being no exception. Taking a proactive stance in anticipation of reduced income, David Walker, our President and CEO, trimmed our 2009 budget without making any drastic cuts and only a minimal reduction in services. As he described it, “We can do anything; we just can’t do everything.”more...
Thanks to a cadre of hardworking volunteers and staff, the 2008 Arts & Flowers luncheon on Nov. 6 at Harrah’s came off as a resounding success. We once again sold out all seats and even in a very poor economy, raised over $26,000. The money will be used in 2009 to support volunteer events and recognition, special staff needs and purchase of art for the museum’s permanent collection.more..
As volunteers we play a key role in making the museum an important cultural destination and gathering place in northern Nevada. One reason we volunteer is because we recognize that the E.L. Cord Museum School, the fresh and exciting exhibits, the educational lectures and fun-filled social events enrich our lives and the lives of our friends and family. According to independentsector.org, 44% of adults volunteer- 83.9 million Americans, representing the equivalent of over 9 million full-time employees at a value of 239 billion dollars per year. In 2007 the national average dollar value of a volunteer hour was estimated at $19.51. In addition, the Bureau of Labor Statistics increases this amount for specialized skill hours. For example, a certified librarian who volunteers in the museum library is valued at $20.23 to $23.13 per hour. What does this have to do with our own museum volunteers? Plenty. more...

William L. Fox Founding Director for The Center for Art + Environment T he Center for Art + Environment at the Nevada Museum of Arts was launched in January 2009. With its formal establishment, the museum has appointed a former Nevadan, writer and poet William Fox for its director. Fox will be responsible for developing a s programming, including an exhibition and publications series, residencies for artists and scholars and partnerships with other institutions around the world.
